Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him. (1 Samuel 16:18)
...Now this is David he's talking about. He is 'a man of war and the Lord is with him'. Alright, go to 2nd Samuel. Now here we're talking about a minister of God in the military, one who does not wear the sword in vain, civil authority or military authority...
And David spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul: And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; (1 Samuel 22:1-2)
The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness: according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me. (2 Samuel 22:21)
See in all of that he kept his hands clean.
For thou art my lamp, O LORD: and the LORD will lighten my darkness. For by thee I have run through a troop: by my God have I leaped over a wall. (2 Samuel 22:29-30)
He teacheth my hands to war; so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms. (2 Samuel 22:35)
He will teach you how to walk in His precepts, how to walk in His covenant and how to do it righteously and win. God Almighty, Jesus of Nazareth has never sent anybody to war to lose. Here's one vital word, meet your Maker now instead of waiting until you die. Develop a relationship with Him. He'll be in school here just as long as you are. He'll be in combat just as long as you are. He'll be in command just as long as you are because He'll never leave you nor forsake you even until the end of the earth.
Now where the largest mistake and the biggest lack of understanding particularly in the western world involved in this, is the fact that God is covenant minded, He is a covenant God and we have never been covenant minded, particularly in western society. We don't know what a blood covenant is all about. But the New Testament is a Blood sworn oath in the Blood of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Listen, these are Blood promises, Brother. I mean, there's no way that God can break them, I mean that's the reason that the 91st Psalm is the soldier's psalm. The Spirit of God wrote that Psalm and gave it to every person in combat, every person that wears the sword in the Name of Jesus. This is vital to know. God is a covenant God. In God, Who is Love, there is no hate in God. Hate, as you and I know it, is of darkness, it is of death, it is of the devil (he's the author of hate). It is the opposite of love. Now the Bible said God hates evil, but now the word 'hate' is used there as a unit of measure and it's used to describe something. God has no hate in Him, He is total good, He is total love, therefore He is exactly opposite of evil. Now in that context, you and I would call that He totally absolutely hates evil, but it's His total love that totally despises it. You understand that? Well, if you don't. pray about it for a while. Amen! So He is absolutely opposite and He is absolutely totally against sin because the wages of sin is death. It is death He is against.
Now, perfected love casteth out fear. Now, I don't have any hate in me. I used to, oh there was a time I was mad at the whole world and it finally developed to a place where it really began to frighten me and I didn't have any emotional response to anybody on earth. And, I met Gloria. Changed the whole thing. I fell in love with her the moment I saw her. And she and I have been on a 44 year honeymoon, I'm telling you. And it's her fault. Yeah! Amen! Did you ever try to fight with somebody that don't fight? Ain't no fun in that! Amen, and she just loved me out of it, praise the Lord; now after these years and being very specific about it, committed to that commandment of love.
